Animal Rights and Welfare Association
Background
As Asia's World City, Hong Kong should be civilized and have a complete rule of law. However, when it comes to safeguarding the rights and welfare of animals, Hong Kong's laws are far from the international standard of being a civilized society. In the context of economic and commercial development, the rights and welfare of animals are only a dispensable issue.
Current Issues
01
A lack of awareness of Hong Kong citizens
02
Outdated animal welfare laws and regulations
03
Insufficient enforcement from supervising authorities
Education
Organise lectures, workshops, and events on animal rights and welfare to raise public awareness and interest in animal-related issues.
Integrate materials related to animal rights and welfare into school curricula to help students understand the needs and conditions of animals, foster a culture of compassion towards animals.
Enforcement
Enforce existing animal protection laws and regulations rigorously, ensuring that penalties for animal cruelty are sufficient to act as a deterrent.
Provide training for law enforcement officers to enhance their understanding of animal rights and welfare laws and improve enforcement efficiency
Legislation
Enhance existing animal protection laws, strengthen penalties for animal abuse, and enhance oversight of activities such as animal trading, transportation, and care.
Advocate and support legislative initiatives, such as banning animal confinement and improving animal treatment in agricultural production.
Animal Welfare: The Five Domains
Good Nutrition
All animals deserve access to clean water and a well-balanced, nutritious diet.
Good Environment
All animals should live in an appropriate environment, with shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Good Health
All animals should be entitled to immediate veterinary attention when sick or injured to avoid unnecessary suffering.
Positive Mental Experiences
All animals deserve to be happy and feel loved, and avoided unnecessary anxiety and stress.
Appropriate Behaviour
All animals should be allowed to express their normal behaviours, which is the way an animal acts in its natural environment.
Activities
School Talks
We provide in-school lectures for primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, advocating the concept of inclusiveness and respect of life. By allowing children to interact with different animals, they can learn how to provide the best care for animals. The lecture covers the definition of animal rights and welfare, how to implement the concepts of animal rights and welfare in daily life, comparing the differences between animal protection laws in other countries and Hong Kong, and discuss how to increase Hong Kong's awareness to animal rights and welfare from the legal perspective.
About the Founder
Susan, a lawyer herself, is also the mother of two cats. Although more people in Hong Kong are now keeping pets, their knowledge on animal rights and welfare is seriously insufficient, as compared to places like Australia or New Zealand. Therefore, Susan founded the Animal Rights and Welfare Association with the mission to educate the general public on how to proactively provide reasonable care to animals. Susan has also completed the Professional Certificate in Veterinary Assistant and hopes to combine her knowledge of animals and legal skills to further promote the reform of laws and regulations relating to animal rights and welfare in Hong Kong.
We need your support!
We welcome support from all parties to help more people understand the importance of animal rights and welfare. Your support not only helps the animals, but also facilitates the progression of civilization and legal development in Hong Kong, creating a true pet-loving community.
